This garment collection was an experiment in tailoring, pattern drafting and fabric manipulation. The theme of “incomplete” was considered throughout the production of this collection OR the idea that an artwork could be intentionally left UNFINISHED.
The garments that were produced were meant to be somewhat unconventional. Details such as open backs, abnormal hems and a signature “floating collar” were all integrated into the designs of each piece. Incompletion and these garment designs have a relationship, the intention was to leave pieces of the garment so that they weren’t fully attached. Generally, work that is ready to be exhibited is fully finished and has almost “prepared itself”. To contrast this, CHAN played with the idea that the work in this collection felt more unprepared and could immediately become un-whole if a detachable piece was removed.
This collection also observed texture and natural materials. Textiles such as wool broadcloth and melton were used for some of the tailored garments as well as a black dyed calf hair rug, which was cut up and used for a three piece ensemble. The purpose of having such a variety in regards to materials was so that connections could be drawn between material choice, silhouette and drape.
